Hello Everyone,
Today’s letter is E, and so today’s book is Ella Enchanted.
Most people may know this as a movie, rather than a book, so that is why I
decided to include it in my list, even though I have not read it.

Everybody hates doing what they’re told. Well. Ella of Frell
hates it more than most, thanks to her fairy gift of obedience, so that she is
magically made to do everything that she is told, regardless of whether she
wants to or not. After befriending the heir to the throne, Ella and Char fall
in love, but as she believes her gift to be a curse, she feels she cannot marry
him. So, to save the kingdom, she leaves him. Because of this unselfish act,
her ‘curse’ is broken, and she is free to marry Char (this is simplified a
lot).

It differs slightly from the film in that Ella befriends
Char at a giant’s wedding, and stays friends with him throughout the book. In
the movie, Ella hates Char as he seems to stand for all sorts of injustices in
the world like giant slavery and banishment etc. In the book, she is friends
with Char, never enemies. And in the movie, the real ‘baddie’ of the story is
Char’s uncle, whereas in the book, he doesn’t seem to be mentioned at all.

It is a general re-telling of the Cinderella story, but with
the difference that Ella does not take her situation sitting down, she gets up
and fights for what she believes in. Again this is another fantastic book for
little girls who need a good role model to look up to.

Enjoyed your post! A role model for me when I was little: hmmm. Didn't really have just one. I imagined up my own role models, taken from the best bits of nice girls I read about (I read voraciously when I was little). And now I am older, I feel free to write about them...

Ella Enchanted was the first Gail Carson Levine book I ever read, and I was hooked. We went through every book written by her as part of our homeschool year. I enjoyed the movie as a movie, but couldn't believe how vastly different it was from the book. One of my kids said the only thing the book and movie had in common was the title. Thank you for featuring this book! One of my all-time favorites.
ReplyDeleteYou're welcome, I'm glad you enjoyed it. Most of my friends watched the movie a lot when I was little, but I never did. Now I have found out it is a book I think I will have a read of it.
