Weekly Update

Hello Everyone,

Here is my weekly update. As it now officially exam time for me, my weeks may get a bit boring, but not too boring. I still plan to keep my late evenings free for some down-time (otherwise I may go mad).

Wednesday
This was another day spent in the library to finally finish my last essay. I worked from about 9am until about 5pm straight, and it was done. Thank goodness. All I had to do was put my bibliography in order, and then hand it in in the morning. A good day’s work.

            Thursday
Handed in my last essay!!! I spent the rest of the day researching for Albuquerque and trying to work out a schedule of classes, which was very difficult, as not all the classes I needed would be offered. But it will be fine, I have a huge range of classes that will fit, and some left over for some other classes that I would like to do rather than being mandatory (History of Dance anyone?) I’m kidding, that is just a backup. Spent the evening doing my ballet classes, and then some extra practise on pointe at the end. Started to choreograph a new routine for me to practise to Let it Go from Frozen. I might get a chance to film it, when I finish the routine.

            Friday
Friday was my last day of lectures as a first year in Aberdeen. Just one lecture in the morning, and then, as it was so nice, I sat and read on Elphinstone Lawn, before getting the bus into town to catch my bus back to Glasgow. So happy to be going home and seeing everyone before it gets really crazy and stressful.

Saturday
I spent Saturday morning at my old dance class, and it was lovely to see everyone again. I even got to teach a few steps which I really enjoyed. Then I headed to get my hair cut, which it really needed, it was far too long for me! My dad and my sister were at the Scottish cup final between Dundee United and St Johnson, so I got to spend an afternoon with my mum, it was great to catch up. They were very disappointed that St Johnson won, although I couldn’t care either way. After a lovely tea with my Mum, Dad, Sister, Gran and Auntie, I headed out to meet a friend for cocktails in the local bar. I had a fabulous time catching up, and tried a few really nice cocktails as well.

            Sunday
This was a day for paperwork. I filled in lots of forms, and worked out what I needed to do for my visa to get to the US. Have now started to arrange everything, and just waiting for the Pre-Departure Meeting to answer some of my questions. After that, I caught the bus back up to Aberdeen, and then had my last night of doing nothing before it started to get crazy tomorrow.

              Monday
I spent the day in the library studying. Very very very hard. This is what my life will be for the next few weeks, so I may not post on here as often as I want to. Studies have to come first at this point.

              Tuesday
Spent the day in the library, and started to make a huge wall mind-map filled with my politics notes. This will be a thing of beauty, as well as helping me to learn. That’s all I did really.

That’s my week so far. Not too interesting, but I thought I would tell you guys about it.

The Amazing Spiderman 2

Hello Everyone,

I said in one of my earlier posts that I would write a review on the film ‘The Amazing Spiderman 2’, so here I go.  Sorry it’s a little late.

The first Amazing Spiderman was good, but this one was better. The differences between Spidey’s character and Peter Parker’s were much more noticeable. Even though they are the same person, when he puts on the mask, Peter becomes a different person, more confident and charming, and less of the goofy, slightly awkward guy Peter feels he is. As Spiderman, he is loved and revered by the people of the city, which Peter somewhat lacks in his own life. He is loved, by Aunt May and Gwen Stacey, but he is damaged after being abandoned by his parents as a young boy, and nothing is going to repair this damage. By being Spiderman, Peter can escape his life for a while, and be a hero, even when his own life is falling apart.

The plot of the Amazing Spiderman was okay, I enjoyed Jamie Foxx’s character arc from a needy weird little man into a super-villain ready to destroy New York. However, the movie was not really about Spiderman beating the bad-guys (we all know that’s the point of the movie), but it was the collapse of Gwen Stacey and Peter’s relationship, which her father had known would lead to her death. This sort of made the movie have a chick-flick, rom-com feel to it, which made the death of Gwen Stacey, although not unexpected, quite startling to the audience.  How Peter dealt with his and Gwen’s relationship difficulties was to try and re-discover himself, both through re-friending Harry Osborn, and trying to find out what his father had been doing in Oscorp Industries before he and his wife abandoned Peter with his aunt and his uncle. The conclusion to this part of the story, what Peter’s father’s research for Oscorp means for Peter, and the future of Spiderman still remains to be concluded, inevitably in the next film.

The Amazing Spiderman 2 was a good film, and I enjoyed Spiderman’s sarcastic wisecracks to the villains he captured, it gave Spiderman a bit of an edge, and made him less of a broody Batman sort of hero, which Tobey MacGuire’s rendition of the role was far too full of, lacking the lighter tone to contrast with. I await the next instalment in the franchise with baited breath to see where they take it.

Travelling the World: Introduction

Hello Everyone,

Something that I keep mentioning is the IEP, which is the International Exchange Programme. Essentially, if I get the grades in my exams, I will be going to study for a year in the University of New Mexico in the USA! This is very exciting, but also a bit stressful and scary (as all new experiences are). As a result I am going to create a new series of posts with the tag: Travelling the World containing all the details of the entire year, both leading up to leaving, and while I am there, and a reflections when I am back.

As well as studying hard for my exams I have to register for classes, fill in VISA forms, research flight prices, and get accommodation sorted. It is difficult as often it takes a lot more time to sort than I plan. I still haven’t gotten everything done. I was also delayed a week in starting this process as I didn’t know whether or not I would be able to go for about a week, so I didn’t bother looking at anything until I knew for definite.

The study abroad office and my Advisor of Studies have been very helpful throughout this process, but the University of New Mexico have been less so. Their website, no matter how many testimonials they put in, does not explain the basic differences between the UK system and the US system in university. If it would just explain how the UNM system works, like semesters and courses. Otherwise it is just poking about in the dark, hoping I am going to pick a course that is actually offered. I spent three hours working out a schedule of classes yesterday, and I am still not done.

Nevertheless, I am very excited about going. It has given me the incentive to try extra hard in my exams, even harder than I would normally. Albuquerque is quite a nice looking place, with some beautiful landscapes and skylines, made by the hills that surround it. It has a hugely diverse student population, with one of the highest percentages of Hispanic students attending their university.

If anyone knows anything about UNM schooling system, don’t be afraid to comment below. I’d really appreciate it.

YouTube Playlist of the Week

Hello Everyone,

My playlist of the week is the Chummy Chatter series by YouTubers SprinkleofGlitter and Zoella:
  1. Should you go to Uni│ ChummyChatter
  2. Bad Relationships & Breakups │ChummyChatter
  3. Boundaries and Saying ‘NO’ChummyChatter
  4. Why are you so skinny? ChummyChatter

I really enjoyed this series of videos as they covered some great issues that are not often covered in youtube videos. The two woman (SprinkleofGlitter and Zoella) who make these videos are approachable and understanding of other viewpoints, but have clear mind sets about their view on the issues. Although I really enjoy their other types of videos and vlogs, these are my favourite series.

Here is the link to them. Let me know what you think in the comments below.

Weekly Update

Hello Everyone,

Wednesday
Well, I spent most of the day on a bus, as I was coming back up to Aberdeen after seeing Wicked: The UK and Ireland tour (see my review here). Read on the bus (trying to get my uni reading done), and then back to the library to start on my essays. A long day.

             Thursday
I had quite a few classes, and spent most of the rest of the time in the library. I had a ballet class at night, then returned to the library to continue work on my essays.

              Friday
Friday was a good day. I had some classes in the morning and I went to the library (again) to continue on the essays. However, I didn’t stay as late as Thursday, as my dad was up in the ‘Deen to watch the cricket. So we met at the station (along with my uncle) and headed to my cousins’ house in Monifieth. Had a lovely night with them, catching up and watching movies. Also, I got some news that I was so happy about: I am getting to go on a study abroad year to University of New Mexico! Will tell you more about that in another post.

               Saturday
Spent the morning at my cousins’, just chilling and chatting before catching the train back to Aberdeen. When I got back I went straight to (surprise, surprise) the library. Spent the rest of the day there and really got cracking with my work.

                Sunday
I did errands and continued to write my essays. Not much to tell.

                Monday
After handing in one of my essays (YES!) I went back to the library to continue writing the second. However, I took the evening off, because it was the Glee Club’s meal out. We went to Chiquitto’s and had a great time. It was lovely to chat and bond with everyone who came.

                Tuesday
I had a class in the morning, but went in a little early to get to the library to continue work on my essay. I then went to Alfie’s with a friend until I met another blogger friend. We chatted and did some blogging stuff, and a little uni work. Unfortunately, walking home, we both got splashed by a bus driving past and got a little wet. Spent rest of the evening writing some more essay. No rest for the wicked.

That was my week. What have you been up to? Comment below if you did something exciting this week.

Celebrity Culture: Is it getting out of hand?

Hello Everyone,

Recently I watched a video by SprinkleofGlitter about YouTube celebrity culture, and it really made it think. SprinkleofGlitter talks about how overwhelmed she is at YouTube meet and greet conventions about meeting people, and how some people wait hours to see the YouTubers. Essentially she touches on the celebrity culture of young girls today, and how the fans idolise their YouTubers.  This got me thinking about the idea of idolising YouTubers, and other celebrities.

 Watch the video
Watch Video Here
People today, especially young teenagers, idolise celebrities too much. There is almost a competition between fans about who can be the biggest super-fan. They also insult those who are not fans, sometimes even with death threats. The fact that this is considered acceptable in society is just unbelievable. These are little girls, they should be taught that this sort of thing is no acceptable to say. They wouldn’t say it to someone’s face, then why should they over social media?

There is a lack of perspective, these people that they are idolising are just people like you and me, they just happen to be famous (for time consuming reasons, I will not go into what I believe justifies someone to be ‘famous’). They do not share everything with you, as they don’t know you, so do not think that you do. They will have a ‘public’ persona that only allows you to see the best of their personality. You have not seen them at their worst, or in a bad mood. People are not perfect, and fans should stop treating their idols as such.
Full Story Here
I will try to be brief on my next point, but it is hard. I do not dislike that people idolise One Direction, or Miley Cyrus. I just think that perhaps, for some balance, people should choose their idols wisely, or just take the best of people that they admire and combine them to be a goal to strive for. I do not like it when people just see someone in magazines and tabloid newspapers, and think, I want that, so I am going to idolise these people. That is not the way to choose your role model, choose someone who stands for something, not someone who is famous just for being famous.

That’s my rant over. I hope you enjoyed this post, and you found it thought-provoking. Comment down below if you did enjoy it, and want some more posts like this.

via: http://media-cache-ak0.pinimg.com/236x/4c/2b/50/4c2b50780dfc45eebffb0e455fefc5a3.jpg

Hello Everyone,

Everybody needs a little adrenalin rush sometimes in their life. Mine comes from that love of dance and performing. Other highs come from jumping off bridges and buildings, or running a marathon. It doesn't matter what it is, unless they are harming themselves or others, just as long as you have something.

Challenge of the week: Find that thing that gets your heart pumping, and do it.

Wicked

Hello Everyone,

Original Stuttgart Cast

Sorry for my absence from here, I have been so swamped with uni work, so unfortunately I haven’t had a chance to write anything. However, I have an hour free to quickly write about my fantastic night out in Glasgow seeing the UK and Ireland Tour of Wicked: the Musical, The Untold Story of the Witches of Oz.
Emily Tierney (Glinda) and Nikki Davis-Jones (Elphaba)

This was my third time in five years seeing this musical, so you can assume I am a fan. There couldn’t be any story surprises, although if you haven’t seen it before, I don’t want to ruin it for you. Just listen carefully to everything said in the first act, it will be useful.
Emily Tierney (Glinda) and Nikki Davis-Jones (Elphaba)

I absolutely love the songs of Wicked, and they are so catchy! I have the Broadway recording, which is fantastic with Idina Menzel as Elphaba, and Kristen Chenowth as Glinda. They are just so perfect in these parts. Clearly the songs are not going to change every time you see the musical, but the performance standard can differ.
Nikki Davis-Jones (Elphaba)

Elphaba, played by Nikki Davis-Jones, was superb. She captured the sarcastic passionate misfit who became the Wicked Witch of the West. She truly convinced the audience that all she meant to do is try to do good, it just came out wrong. Her version of Defying Gravity got the biggest cheer of the night at the end of the second act. It was the best version of the song that I have seen performed. She managed to portray the depth of emotion that was needed for the part, despite the slightly rushed element of the show (not any of the actors’ faults, really down to lack of time).
Emily Tierney (Glinda)

The next witch of Oz, Glinda, had a slightly more difficult job to do, as well as the seriousness of the role, she needed to have the biggest character arc of all the characters, starting as a dim insipid girl into a strong independent witch, with a lot of comedy in there as well. In the first act, especially the opening song, I thought that Emily Tierney (who played Glinda) was little pitchy, and struggled to reach some of the notes, but this can be put down to nerves. I would just like to say that she never hit a wrong note, but her voice was perhaps straining a little to get the volume that was needed. Nevertheless her version of Popular was one that she really made her own, and was one off the highlights of the show. And by the start of the second act, she was absolutely flawless, and really came into her own; especially in For Good, which moved me to tears.
Liam Doyle (Fiyero) and Nikki Davis-Jones (Elphaba)

Prince Fiyero, played by Liam Doyle, was a pretty impressive guy. Handsome, and with a swagger, he certainly looked the part. His dancing in Dancing Through Life was superb, which highlighted that perhaps he had been cast mostly based on his dancing ability, as his voice, while good, was not as strong. His performance with Elphaba in As Long as You’re Mine, was therefore surprisingly good. Again, although this is no fault of his, I would have liked a little more emotional depth from the character, but there just wasn’t enough time.

The highlight of the show however, was not any of the principals, but was the ensemble. The costumes and make-up were fantastic, and they were so well rehearsed it took my breath away. They looked as if they were having the best time. The big numbers, Dancing Through Life and One Short Day just put a smile on my face. Every single one of them was individual, but they were so together. They made me wish that it was socially acceptable to break into song and dance in real life.  I am trying really hard not to use too many clichés, but it is just so difficult when they were that good.
Dale Rapley (The Wizard) and Nikki Davis-Jones (Elphaba)

One of the problems I had with the production was that right at the end, when you see Elphaba being melted by Dorothy, one of the iconic and most important scenes, there was a technical problem. For the effect, and in order to set up an essential plot twist, a curtain was pulled across the front of the stage. Therefore, with the use of a backlight, the audience would only see the silhouette of Dorothy and the Wicked Witch. However, this went wrong, and I could not see anything apart from the green flames where Elphaba was melted. Only because of my previous knowledge could I have known what had happened. However, this is a small point that marred an otherwise very enjoyable show.
The biggest cheer at the end was saved for Scotsman George Ure (Boq)

Reflections on the A to Z Challenge

Hello Everyone,

I thoroughly enjoyed doing the A to Z Challenge this last month. It was lots of fun, and most of the time I found it not too difficult to write everyday. At times I found it taxing, but forcing myself to write really helped me get past ‘blogger’s blog’ as it were. And sometimes I was a little late in posting, but I got there eventually.

My writing has improved, and I have gotten much faster at it as well. My brain now seems to have a blogging switch that says ‘right, I’m blogging now, get going’, and writing my posts just seems to come much more naturally (now I just need to get an essay writing switch as well!)

I had to be much more organised than I normally am with my posts, and have them planned well in advance to get them done (all the subjects chosen and things like that). And once I got into a pattern with my writing, it was easier to continue with what I was doing. I would have a routine of when I will write, and I think that the A to Z Challenge really helped with that, without it I think I would have been a little more aimless with my writing. It is a very good challenge for new bloggers as it helps you get used to writing, but people will actually visit your blog and give you helpful hints and tips about how to improve, which you will not necessarily get if you didn’t do the challenge.

Most of all, I really enjoyed visiting all the new blogs that I wouldn’t necessarily have found otherwise. I didn’t manage to visit a lot every-day, but those that I enjoyed I subscribed to, and can easily get back to. I really enjoyed seeing all the different types of blogs: travel, lifestyle, creative writing, D.I.Y. etc. There are so many out there, and there are some ideas that I wouldn’t even have contemplated making into a blog, but that worked really well. I have also been given some new ideas about content in my blog, and where to take it. It was such a learning experience, and I am so glad that I did it. Thank you A to Z Team for making this happen.

Dealing with Disappointment

Hello Everyone,

Recently I have had a bit of a disappointment in my life, and there is a chance that something that I was really looking forward to will not happen. I have never really dealt with disappointment that well, in fact, I’ve never really lost out on something that I would be this disappointed about. Some people see that as luck, I see it as hard work. I work hard to get what I want, and if I don’t get something, then I tend to blame myself for not working hard enough. Or, I think that I shouldn’t have let myself get so excited about it, I should rule with my head instead of my heart. Keeping walls up is what I try to do, especially when I am stressed or disappointed about things. I am not an extravert, so when I want to be alone, it could be up to a week before I speak to another person, especially during exam time.

Disappointment is difficult for anyone to deal with. And, unfortunately, it is a part of life. If we are constantly being disappointed then it can be harder to bounce back from it. However, we must believe that what doesn’t kill us makes us stronger. If it was really meant for us, then it would have happened, if not, then it clearly wasn’t. This sounds rather corny, but it isn’t meant to be. It’s more the basis of accepting that it isn’t going to happen, and moving on. I don’t really believ in fate and all that, but perhaps there is a plan out there for what we are meant to do. And even if what you want to happen doesn’t happen at this point in time, then perhaps it will happen in the future, if you still want to make it happen.

How do you cope with disappointment? Comment below to tell me how you got through a disappointing time in your life.

 Hello Everyone,

This is a lovely quote, and it completely sums up the way I think about life. You only get out of life what you put in, so struggling and working hard today means a better future. Ever the optimist I am!

Challenge for the week: push yourself in something that you've been doing, work an hour longer than you need to. You'll feel the benefit tomorrow!

Scottish Ballet's Romeo and Juliet

Hello Everyone,

I was lucky enough to get a hold of a couple of tickets to go and see Scottish Ballet's adaptation of Romeo and Juliet in Her Majesty's Theatre in Aberdeen. I haven't seen this ballet before, and was looking forward to it. I was not disappointed. The choreography, which was a revival of Krzysztof Pastor's 2008 work, with the added effect of archival footage showing the passage of time from 1930's Verona to 1950's, and then into the 90's.

Image courtesy of Andy Ross/ Sourced http://www.scottishballet.co.uk/romeo-juliet/romeo-and-juliet-gallery.html

The first act, although slightly slow, established the story very well. An interesting introduction of Juliet walking slowly through the end of a battle highlights her almost transcendence from the violence of the feud. The simple baby blue dress that doesn't change throughout the ballet, along with Romeo's suit, contrasts with the bright colours of the Montagues, and the darker tones of the Capulet's costumes, showing the youthful innocence of the love that she and Romeo share. This is again shown in their pas de deux, which has within it the teasing and laughter that only a first teenage love can have.

Image courtesy of Andy Ross/ Sourced http://www.scottishballet.co.uk/romeo-juliet/romeo-and-juliet-gallery.html

The Capulets in the beginning in an almost fascist-style black uniform are portrayed as the 'evil' of the two clans, contrasting with the easy laid back appearance of the Montagues. The classic chess black and white knight metaphor highlights the timelessness of the tale, as well as the changes in the film and costume of the dancers to reflect the passing of time.

Image courtesy of Christina Ross/ Sourced http://www.scottishballet.co.uk/romeo-juliet/romeo-and-juliet-gallery.html

The second act was more action based, and did not give an awful amount of time to the principal's pas de deux. The fight scenes were perfectly choreographed, with a slightly more real feeling to it, than abstract movements. However, the finale of the ballet was beautiful, the love between the two principals was clear, moving the audience into an emotional teary silence.

Image courtesy of Andy Ross/ Sourced http://www.scottishballet.co.uk/romeo-juliet/romeo-and-juliet-gallery.html

Andrew Peasgood (the alternative Romeo that we saw, the original is Erik Cavalleri) as Romeo complimented Luciana Ravizzi's (Sophie Martin as the original) Juliet beautifully. There is a lyrical connection between them that captured the young carefree love of teenagers. Although Martin does not possess the clearly more youthful appearance of a traditional Juliet, the younger face of Cavallari toned this down, pointing out the maturity of the characters, and that perhaps age doesn't really matter. This was touched upon with the pas de deux between Juliet and her mother, when she lovingly touched Juliet's lower stomach, emphasizing the maturing of a woman, and the continuation of the family line (which unfortunately will not happen). This is a poignant moment between the dancers, full of love and feeling behind it.

Image courtesy of Christina Riley/ Sourced http://www.scottishballet.co.uk/romeo-juliet/romeo-and-juliet-gallery.html

The portrayal of the mother throughout the ballet is a confusing one, but one that shows off excellently the complicated role of a mother, stuck between love for her child and husband, and her loyalty to her family and its discipline. This balance was struck brilliantly by Eve Mutso, who played Lady Capulet. A striking figure in a dress of black velvet, she tried to steer her children in the direction she thought best, and protect them from outside threats. In a slight deviation from the original text, it is Lady Capulet that brings the priest to Juliet, who then gives her the potion that indirectly causes the deaths of the young lovers.

Image courtesy of Christina Riley/ Sourced http://www.scottishballet.co.uk/romeo-juliet/romeo-and-juliet-gallery.html

The highlight of the ballet had to be Jamiel Laurence (Victor Zarallo as the original) in the part of Mercutio, in which he was exquisite. Ingrained into his very movement was a charisma and elegance that cannot be taught. It was he that moved you to laughter when he joked with the Capulets and to tears with the look of betrayal in his eyes as he was stabbed in the back. He was the perfect person in that role.

Image courtesy of Christina Riley/ Sourced http://www.scottishballet.co.uk/romeo-juliet/romeo-and-juliet-gallery.html

I really enjoyed seeing Scottish Ballet's version of Romeo and Juliet, and I thoroughly recommend it to anyone. This is a superb piece of work, and if I could go again I happily would (hint hint).

Glee Concert

Hello Everyone,

Thursday was my Glee Club concert, and it went really well. I had a solo, and I think it went well. We all had a great time doing it, so that's all that matters. There weren't too many major screw-ups, so we could laugh it off. Here are a few photos from backstage (there are no ones of the performance yet). Hope you enjoy.
The dressing room: not too manic
Just some wee selfies
why do I always pull the most stupid faces in pictures?
Me right before my solo, I was a bit nervous to say the least!
There was a review of the night written, and here's the link to it. I just want to say thank you to everyone who helped make the night so great, and for all the rehearsal time people put in. It so paid off, and everyone did a fantastic job!

What's going on?

Hello Everyone,

It is the day after the A to Z Challenge, and since I haven’t been doing my weekly updates, I thought I would sum up all the things that have happened in my life since the challenge started.

Well, for the first few weeks I was on holiday from university (as much of a holiday as you can call it when I had three essays to write and four books to read). This was a really lovely holiday as I was at home in Glasgow seeing family and friends for long catch ups. This is the one downside to going to university away from home, you don’t get to see your family as much as you want to, but it does make the time you have with them more precious.

I turned nineteen. I did do a post of sorts on this, with all my bookish memories and things, but I thought I would share with you what I actually did on the day. I had quite a relaxing day, with small long lie, and then met up with my friend Laura, my sister and her friend, and we went to see The Amazing Spiderman 2, which was so good. I am planning a review on this later, so keep an ear out. I went out for tea with the family, and then back home for cake and presents.

Once university started back, it was all a-go. Essays were due, preparation for lectures and tutorial and exams (aaaaaaahhhhhhh!) was needed. There was no more relaxed catch-ups and coffee, just a never-ending pile of work. I have managed to get some of it done, but as time is ticking on, there just seems to be more and more to do.

It was also a busy time for me as I am part of the Glee Club, and our summer concert was quickly drawing nearer. So there have been a lot of rehearsals for that, one was 6 hours long! I am a little nervous about it as I have a solo (I sing Missy Higgins’ Sugarcane, if you want to check it out), and I’ve never really sang in front of a huge audience by myself before. But I have rehearsed a lot, so everything should be okay. (Once this is published, it will be the night of the concert, so if any of you are in the Aberdeen area, and fancy seeing a show filled with singing, dancing and lots of fun, then get yourself over to the Lemon Tree for a 7.30pm start. It’s only a fiver if you are a student and £8 if you are anything else). I will be updating all of you on my Instagram as the action is happening, so check that out in my sidebar.

Aaaaaaaaand, other than the A to Z Challenge, that is what has happened in my life. What’s been going on with you? Let me know in the comments below.
